Student Awards in Spring Semester

It was a very eventful spring semester in terms of awards to our undergraduate and graduate students. It is a pleasure to pass along news of these successes.

Ms. Yue Liang was recognized at the Student Awards Luncheon with the Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Award. This is Georgia Tech's TOP award, which is presented to the member of the senior graduating class with the most outstanding scholastic record. The award includes a check for $5000 and a trophy. Yue is graduating with a 4.0 GPA. She has conducted research with Professors Tolbert and Bommarius, and served as a Teaching Assistant in the School. She will be attending Harvard for graduate study.

Anthony Giordano (graduate student in the Marder research group) has been awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowship and the NDSEG graduate fellowship.

In addition, the following students received Honorable Mentions from NSF:

Carlos Zuniga (graduate student in the Marder research group)
Emily Malcolm (graduate student in the Kroger research group)
Ed Hohenstein (graduate student in the Sherrill research group)
Glen Harris (graduate student in the Fernandez research group)
Yue Liang (undergraduate student conducting research with Professors Tolbert and Bommarius)

Ashley Ringer (graduate student in the Sherrill research group) is the recipient of the Anna Louise Hoffman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research for 2008. Given by Iota Sigma Pi, the award recognizes the top female graduate student in chemistry for the given year. Ashley is a previous awardee of the NSF Graduate Fellowship.

Nicole Fay was awarded the CoS Undergraduate Research Award, in part for the work she completed (and published) with Professor Payne.

The following CHEM and BCHM undergraduates received GT's Presidential Undergraduate Research Award for summer 2008 (CHEM had more awards than any school on campus except BME):

Sierra Schmidt (with Professor Duffy in BIOL)
Andres Bolivar (with Professor France)
Marc Bruce (with Professor Kelly)
Jessica Dougherty (with Professor Lieberman)
Rebecca Hood (with Professor Oyelere)
Kaycee Quarles (with Professor Hud)
Christy Stager (with Professor Oyelere)
Cody Stone (with Professor Zhang)
Sarah Lenceski (with Professor Eckert)
Jesse Haulk (with Professor Payne)

The School will also host the following PURA awardees from other CoS schools:

Christina Graves (a biology major, with Professor Hud)
Benjamin Holladay (a physics major, with Professor Hud)

Rachel Givens (undergraduate students conducting research with Professor El Sayed) is the recipient of a GT Presidential Fellowship for graduate study.

The following undergraduate students were recognized at the Institute Awards Luncheon today with awards from the School:

Analytical Chemistry award: Alexander Wang
CRC Awards in Freshman Chemistry: Brenda Morales-Pico and Igor Coropceanu
W.M. Spicer Scholarship in Chemistry (rising seniors): Quaovi Sodji and Alexander Wang
Peter B. Sherry Memorial Scholarship: Jason Murray and Kenneth Taylor
Merck Index Award: Crystal Fagan

Crystal Fagan - CETL/Frank Bogle Nontraditional Student Award
Dustin Hipp - Don Bratcher Human Relations Award, and Alvin M. Ferst Leadership and Entrepreneur Scholarship Award
Ashley Ringer - Women's Resource Center Annual "Make a Difference" Award
Nicole Fay - Williams-Walls Life Sciences Award

Also of note: Crystal Fagan, Nicole Fay, Dustin Hipp and Quaovi Sodji are the Institute's first recipients of the B.S. in Biochemistry at the spring 2008 commencement.

Congratulations to all of the award winners (and their mentors!)

Congratulations to our newest PhDs!

Dr. Courtney Sorrell successfully defended her thesis on Friday, June 13, 2008. The title of her thesis is "Fundamental studies of microgel thin films at interfaces".

Congratulations, Courtney!

Thesis Committee:
Prof. Andrew Lyon (Advisor, Chemistry and Biochemistry)
Prof. Art Janata (Chemistry and Biochemistry)
Prof. Art Ragauskas (Chemistry and Biochemistry)
Prof. Haskell Beckham (PTFE)
Prof. Gary Pielak (Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biophysics, UNC-CH)

Faculty and Staff Awards from Spring Semester

Kay Gilstrap won an Outstanding Staff Award.

Jean-Luc Brédas won Outstanding Faculty Research Award

David Collard won The Class of 1934 Outstanding Innovative Use of Education Technology Award

And last but not least Mary Peek won the coveted ANAK award. This is a secret society of students that awards a faculty member each year who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Institute and to the student body through teaching, research, advisement, and general involvement in campus life.

Safety Accident and Incident Reporting

During the past academic year (2006-2007) there were 5 safety related incidents reported across teaching lab and research labs. The reported incidents included an acid spill, fire, slipping on wet floor, finger cut, and chemical inhalation. In all cases the extent of injury was none to minor.

Already this academic year (2007-2008) there have been 3 incidents (hot plate burn, cut finger and a fire) reported.

The importance of a safe work environment in both teaching and research labs can not be over stressed. I would encourage all groups to discuss safety at their next group meeting. In addition, each individual should know where safety showers, eye washes and fire extinguishers are located in their workspace.

Although zero accidents/incidents should be the goal, in the event of an incident or "near miss accident" you must report the incident such that follow-up investigations can take place, as appropriate.

The accident/incident report form is located on the school's safety website along with other safety information.

If you would like to bring safety issues to our attention, you may do so through your group's safety captain, members of the school's safety committee, or myself.
