Responsibilities of the Undergraduate Program Coordinator include:
(i) Management of the advisement program for chemistry and biochemistry
undergraduate majors and individual student advisement. The Coordinator
will provide individual advisement for a substantial fraction of our
250 majors (which is expected to continue to grow), and coordinate a
program that involves 4-6 other academic professional staff in advisory
roles.
(ii) Lecture instruction. The Coordinator will typically be assigned
as instructor for one lecture class per semester. This would include
CHEM 1310 (General Chemistry), but may also include upper-level classes
in the disciplinary divisions of the School.
(iii) Seminar course instruction and coordination. The individual
will coordinate CHEM 1000 and CHEM 2000 seminar classes, which are designed
to provide chemistry and biochemistry majors with an introduction to
college life and professional career tracks, and to enhance skills necessary
in their careers (e.g., presentation skills, writing, ethics, etc).
(iv) Student organizations. The Coordinator will serve as the
faculty advisor for the American Chemical Society student affiliate
chapter, and coordinate activities with other undergraduate student
organizations.
(v) Development of undergraduate research opportunities. The
individual will coordinate opportunities for undergraduate research,
including the School's summer undergraduate research program and participate
in the development of other experiential learning initiatives.
(vi) The undergraduate curriculum. The Coordinator will develop
a broad vision for the chemistry and biochemistry B.S. degree programs
(including the research option, international plan, co-op program, etc),
and provide input to the Undergraduate Committee on all aspects of these
programs.
(vii) Alumni relations. The Coordinator will maintain contact
with alumna/e through production of newsletters and coordination of
events.
(viii) It is expected that the individual will initiate, or contribute
to, preparation of grant applications in support of instructional/pedagogical
and undergraduate research activities, and take on additional activities
over time. The individual will work closely with a team of Academic
Professionals and the faculty of the School on all aspects of the undergraduate
programs. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track position in the Academic
Professional (General Faculty) track at Georgia Tech.
The School endeavors to provide high-quality educational experiences
to students from a variety of majors across the Institute. Georgia Tech's
cohort of entering undergraduate students is among the most-highly qualified
at a public institution (the average SAT of entering students is approximately
1340 and average high school GPA of 3.74/4.00). The School's undergraduate
population has increased dramatically in the last few years and we expect
to experience further growth with the recent development of the B.S.
in Biochemistry degree.
