Responsibilities
Leigh is the Lab Coordinator for Ga. Tech's Freshman Chemistry Program which has over 2500 students per year. She is responsible for the design, implementation and management for the laboratory component of the Chemistry 1310, 1211K and 1212K courses. Leigh serves on School and Institute-wide committees. She also has taught GT 1000 and CETL 8000. She and the other freshman faculty design, implement, train and supervise over fifty graduate instructors each year in teaching methods. Leigh also serves as an academic advisor for Chemistry & Biochemistry undergraduates.
Teaching Interests
Leigh has been actively involved in teaching and supporting undergraduates for many years. Currently is she engaged in new lab development, continually striving to improve students understanding of chemistry through their lab experience. Leigh is interested in promoting more active learning in the labs and is in the process of converting more of the labs to a guided inquiry format. She is also very interested in improving the students understanding of the scientific method through scientific writing. Leigh has also been actively involved in providing undergraduates with the newest equipment possible, securing over $200,000 in grant monies for the purchase of new equipment for the undergraduate labs.
Scholarship
Leigh's scholarship has always focused on undergraduates. She is dedicated to providing good teaching pedagogy or creating support structures for undergraduates. During a five year stint in the Undergraduate Provost's office she coordinated academic advisement campus-wide and started a campus-wide academic advising network. She was also responsible for implementing undergraduate research opportunities campus-wide and assisting the Vice Provost with academic support issues. Recent scholarship includes:
