Research Interests
Infrared Optical Sensor Systems. Mid-infrared optical sensor systems, operating in the spectral window from 2-20 5m, are particularly attractive for optical sensing schemes since molecule specific information due to the stimulation of ground vibrational modes of organic molecules are accessible. One aim of this project is to miniaturize the light source (e.g. quantum cascade lasers), the waveguide (e.g. integrated planar structures or hollow waveguides) and the detector (e.g. quantum well devices) in order to develop possibly integrated devices for qualitative and quantitative determination of organic compounds in the liquid phase and in the gas phase. A second focus is to monitor methane and hydrocarbon in seawater by developing a reliable and rugged sensing system, which is suitable for in-situ measurements.
Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) for the Characterization and Optimization of Chemical Recognition Interfaces. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) provides complementary information by simultaneously recording topographical and electrochemical information with a lateral resolution in the sub-micrometer range. SECM is suitable for the non-destructive investigation of the activity of biological systems, and characterization of biomimetic surfaces. Current research is focused on new mechanisms to separate the electrochemical from the topographical information by integrating the features of SECM and other microscopies, such as AFM.
Molecularly Imprinted Polymers. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are functionalized polymers that can "recognize" guest molecules because the shape and functionality of the guest has been "imprinted" during the polymerization. Having great promise for chemical sensing, separation techniques, and artificial receptor-based assays, such systems are being designed, synthesized, and examined by single-molecule and other spectroscopies.
