B.S., Chemistry with Certificate in Sexuality Studies, University of Iowa, 2004; Ph.D., Chemistry with emphasis in Chemistry Education, Purdue University, 2008

 

Responsibilities:

Cianán is the Associate Director of Freshmen Chemistry in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His responsibilities include developing the laboratory, recitation, and technology components of the freshman chemistry courses and maintaining these components, providing administrative support for the Freshman Program, teaching freshman chemistry courses, development of new pedagogies, assessment of current and new pedagogies, and academic advisement.


Teaching Interests:

Cianán is involved in the teaching and administration of Chemistry 1211K and 1212K (Chemical Principles I and II). In the future, he is interested in teaching special topics courses on topics such as food chemistry, chemistry education, and green chemistry.


Research & Scholarship:

As a graduate student, Cianán developed an undergraduate laboratory curriculum intended to integrated research into the first and second year laboratory experiences. As a postdoctoral fellow, his work focused on faculty development programming and the assessment thereof. His current projects focus on (1) the development of active metacognitive processing tools for use in the undergraduate classroom, (2) collegiate faculty professional development programming and the impacts of these programs on the professoriate nationally, (3) science identity development as impacted by undergraduate and graduate educational experiences, and (4) education research methodology development, particularly focused on identity components as they interface with data collection and processing.
