Hund's Rules are Merely Suggestions:  Relativistic Effects Deep Into the Periodic Table

The goal of this presentation is to provide an understanding for the differences in electronic structure between heavy elements, especially in the actinides berkelium and californium, and lighter ones.  We will delve into how relativistic effects drastically alter chemistry and break the rules that we have been taught for how to think about electronic structure.  I will end by showing that these changes that occur after curium result in the onset of chemistry not observed in lighter actinides that is more akin to that found in high oxidation state, transition metals.

Thomas E. Albrecht-Schmitt holds the Gregory R. Choppin Chair in Chemistry at Florida State University, and is the Director of the Center for Actinide Science & Technology.  He received his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Illinois.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a member of the Department of Energy, Chemical Sciences Council.  His awards include the ACS Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry and the ACS Southern Chemist Award.  His research focuses on lanthanide and actinide chemistry, structure and bonding, radiochemistry, crystallography, materials chemistry, and nuclear energy.
